Art Car Help in San Diego Area

Hey guys, I'm in the process of building a new art car for the 2010 burn and was wondering if anyone had any of the following materials/items they would be interested in donating:
1 1/2" PVC Schedule 40 or 80 pipe
1 1/2" Slip Slide Tee's
1", 1 1/2" or 2" Square aluminum pipe
Any type of conductive and shielded copper wire (color and gauge don't really matter, it's an art car ;)
Speaker wire
Old speakers
5+ HP go cart engine
Bike or motor cycle chain
Old motor cycle or mountain bike parts / gears

So basically the concept is a complete walking vehicle, no wheels what so ever, 12 legs, measuring 13 feet long, 10 feet wide, 12 feet tall, seats 5-6. I've pretty much figured out how to get a 100 percent fluid movement to where its not clunky like others I have seen and its remains perfectly level with no up and down bumpy travel!! I have the plans drawn up and have been in the R&D stage for a couple months to the point where I got the mechanics of it figured out. I have the electrical system(s), clutch brake steering system and sound systems all designed as well...So now its go time for the complete working fabrication and then decoration to begin, after all I only have 320 days left till the man burns =)

If you would like to follow the progress I will be posting pictures on my facebook page located here: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?id=1596036726&aid=2027336

Also, not that I need to bribe my fellow burners but I make stickers (among other things, I run a large format printing company) for several camps on playa (Crazy Horse, Purple Palace and a few others). Anyone that is able to help me out I would be more than willing to print 500-1000 stickers for YOUR camp and or a banner or two as trade =) If not hit me up on the playa for a ride anyway! Much love

Dragonfly Art Car for sale! $1000

1986 Volvo Stationwagon, “Art Car”, The base vehicle is an 1986 Volvo Stationwagon. I chose this vehicle due to it’s reliability and being worthy of fixing. It has over 200K miles on it, and the odometer is broken. It starts well and runs well. It is currently registered and licensed in the State of California. It just passed the stringent, State of California smog inspection/test, when I renewed the registration this year. You may drive it on public roads, but, it only has 2 seatbelts, for the driver and the front seat passenger. It is probably not legal to drive on public roads with people in the back. Maybe, in some communities and situations, you could get away with it.

This vehicle is actually a kinetic sculpture called, “The Dragonfly Lands” and it was built for Burningman 2007. I worked with a team of people to create this car, and with the generous contributions of everyone who worked on it, it was built in 5 weeks during the months of July and August 2007. I did my best to do all the modifications with a high level of craftsmanship and integrity, given the time and financial constraints. The car functioned beautifully on the Playa, and was granted both day and night licenses by the Department of Mutant Vehicles. I applied for and was granted permission to bring the car back in 2008, but chose not to do so. You should be able to take it to the Burn, as is.

The Dragonfly sculpture attaches to the top of the car with ratchet, tie-down straps. The wings, tailboom, and head are held in place by bungee cords. A central mast and guywires support the wings. There is a fabric skin that stretches over the frame of the bug, and the inside is lit up with fluorescent flood lights. It can be seen from a mile away, no kidding. The wingspan is 28 feet. There is a shelf on the back bumper to hold a small generator to power the lighting.

I attached a tow-bar to the front bumper and towed the car to Reno, Nevada. I drove it to the Playa from Reno. I disconnected the driveshaft, and tied it up with heavy wire, then reconnected it in Reno. Vehicles with an automatic transmission cannot be towed with the drive wheels coupled to the transmission and the wheels on the ground, as this would destroy the transmission. Towing the car with all four wheels on the ground is called “flat-towing”, and the car flat-tows excellently.

There is a u-shaped, asymmetrical couch in the back of the car. There are custom, form-fitting cushions for the back seating. The back area is accessed by stepping up on a shelf that is attached to the trailer hitch, and then stepping through the gap in the back of the car. It is easy for relatively agile people to climb aboard. Theoretically, 8 people can sit in the back, but 8 adults weigh too much for the current suspension. 10 or 12 children could ride. There are storage areas under the seats.

There are two covers for the car. The first is made of shrinkwrap and it protects the entire back of the car. The car cannot be driven with this cover installed. Shrinkwrap will degrade rapidly in the direct sun…….and the cover probably has 6 months of life left in it. The second cover is a tent rainfly that covers only the front seats. It is much easier to install than the shrinkwrap. The back part of the car has drainholes to allow rain to drain out and not puddle.

Full disclosure statement!!! There are few things that need to be fixed for the car to be better. The blower motor for the heater does not work. The dashboard instrument lights do not work. The right side rear view mirror is broken (the frame, not the glass.) The taillights are damaged, they work, but the plastic lens is broken (I have replacements, but they are not from the exact same year, and so need to be modified to make the wiring connections all work.) I have been told that the fuel level gauge does not work correctly.

The doors cannot be opened. The driver and front seat passenger must climb over the door sill to get into and out of the car. You must be fairly agile to do this. After cutting the roof off the car, I reinforced the body to compensate for the removal of the structural part of the unibody. The car was undrivable without the added frame structure. I consulted with a structural engineer about how best to add the framework, and followed his suggestions. I offer no guarantee of any kind as to the ability of this car to remain intact and protect the occupants in the event of a crash. You will have to inspect the modifications I made and make your own determination of the safety of this car.

The car has a stereo system, including a in-dash Radio/CD/SD card/USB flash drive reader, 2 6”X9” speakers in boxes, and 2 3 ½” door speakers. The in-dash unit stopped working on about the 5th day at Burningman, due to getting exposed to too much dust, and now it needs to be dis-assembled and cleaned, after which it should, theoretically, work.

One of the great things about this car, is that it goes exactly 5 m.p.h. when you take your foot off the brake. 5 m.p.h. is the speed limit at Burningman. Please see the Burningman website for detailed information about what it takes to bring an art car to the event. You must pre-register, get pre-approved, and then pass the on-Playa inspections.

A tremendous amount of time, energy, and resource went into the construction of this car. The basic vehicle could be used for many different uses, including a platform for another art car, a truck, parade float, touring car, etc.

Included in the price: The Volvo. The complete dragonfly sculpture including the thorax/core, tailboom, wings, head, mast, and most of the rigging to install it all. The spare tail-lights. A Volvo repair manual. The title. The 2 covers. I will teach you to assemble it all.

Not included: Honda generator. Some of the lighting parts. Some of the rigging parts.

The asking price for this vehicle is $1000. The value, including labor and materials, exceeds $10,000. This is probably the cheapest way to have your own art car to bring to Burningman.

Ok, so I've been using my rig for 4 years now. Some of you may have seen it sailing around on the Playa and it spends some time at the BLack Rock Yacht Club when it's not moored at our camp near Pinky's and PleasAir. It's been dependable, beautiful, capable, easy, functional and the best way to bring a big group around the play. Not to mention it sails in a good wind. It's called the Royal Can-you. Based on a 1985 pontiac fiero GT it's a double hull polynesian canoe with 2 sails. It's easy to tranport, breaks down quickly and easy, simple to use and maintain and it could be your camp art car. Why am I selling? I want to build a new car. An art ship actually and this is going to be seed money. I'm asking 8K for a nice turn key art car. You can reach me at gbarron@hiwheel.com and I can send pics. I'll post a few in the pic section here too. Lemme know.

Golf Cart Advice Please

Due to medical issues, I've received a handicapped placard this year from the DMV Hotties (thanks!) I'm looking for a reasonable golf cart to Playafy and was wondering about gas v electric issues. I know that electric motors and playa dust don't get along. But most golf carts seem to use sealed motors. As for charging, I have a genny I can charge from, but having looked at range/consumption of 36 and 48v carts, it actually looks like I'd use less gas to run a gas powered cart than to fully charge an electric cart with my generator. Can anyone give me some advice as to your experience with either?
Thanxxx

Electric car question

I have an electric Columbia Par Car (golf cart). No manuals sadly, but its not that old, perhaps 80's to 90's, It runs 6 volt batteries. I was wondering if Im better off making it a 12 volt system. If thats even possible and or would it be worth my bother. Batteries seem alright but if i need new ones that can get costly.

The other thing I noticed is when I put the peddle down to accelerate I have to tap it again to get it to slow down. Its as if its on cruise control. Id like to see that the speed is more regulated. Any tips?

So we've been working on this concept based on an electric golf cart we were expecting to get. It may not happen now but we might be able to buy something cheap. Craigslist has some good prospects and we'd prefer gasoline anyway so our genny can be used for better things.

The idea is to make a pirateship that looks like it's made out of candy. Since we're just starting, we're looking for ideas and if we're buying the base for it, we want to also get ideas for what people have had success mounting weird stuff too. Comments? Ideas? Any place better than craigslist? Anyone know someone who works at a junkyard who might see a thing or two come though that he could sell for a good price?

WickerMan 2009 update

WickerMan 2009

The second annual WickerMan is almost upon us! WickerMan is the mid-Atlantic's burn with an Earth Spirited twist. Personal exploration, inspiration without sanction, possibility without constraint. It is on the Land that we become a community of participants, taking action through Art, Fire and Self Expression. WickerMan is an Altar to the Possible on the Land that Sustains us all.

Within this ethos are the gifts of our participants- Theme Camps, Art, Performance and Volunteering. We have a wild and diverse host of registered Theme Camps and Art this year. Experience everything from Flaming Tetherball (yes, that is verbatim) to Spanish flaming liquor rituals and everything in between. You could find yourself leading an impromptu yoga class or rocking your body in Sound Town, an all night aural cornucopia of DJs from across the East Coast, matched by our largest Art Grant ever for deco lighting and decorations.

We started with $6,000 in the Art Grant budget for Artists to fund a variety of initiatives, from Altars to Performance to Installations, even mutated vehicles! And we still have a bit left to give out for late proposals, so do ask! Our Artists are guaranteeing us a visual feast of beautiful little installations, big in-your-face performances and tokens like free noodles or a new 'do. Be sure to catch Brian running around in his solar powered broom ride!

If Volunteering is your cup of tea, there are many fields where your hands are needed. Consider Ranging to keep WckerMan the litter free event it was last year, or Greeting your fellow burners as they arrive. If swinging a hammer is your thing, then there is a place for you to help build the Man. Set-up Weekend is May 15-17, and that's a head-on collision with what lies behind the curtain. We've ordered the lumber and are preparing our designs for building the WickerMan. Come join the crew to create the biggest effigy east of the Mississippi! Just the normal $10 a night grounds fees apply, day trips are free.

May 21st-25th is the Burn, he flames on Saturday night, early-in and late-out is fine by us. Joe Average registration closes May 9th at $55, Better late than never closes May 19th at $65. And then there is THE GATE.

Visit www.wickermanburn.org for more information and online registrations. Or call the office at 814.784.3080.

WickerMan Burn 09!

Open Event Registration for WickerMan 2009
Set-up May 15-17, The Burn May 21-25

WickerMan is an event that brings together Burn Culture, the Art of Giving, Ecological Responsibility, culminating in an event that depends of the Radical Self-Expression of each individual. Based on the tenets of Burning Man of the Black Rock Desert, we actively incorporate their founding principles- Communal Participation, Decommodification, Radical Inclusion and Radical Self-Reliance. In essence, at WickerMan, Radical Self-Expression Meets Radical Earth Spirit.

We convene to celebrate what we as individuals offer to the community, through Art, Gifting and Self-Reliant Participation. Together we commune within the land to build and burn the biggest Man east of the Mississippi River. Individual participation is what makes this event happen, we depend on each other for content and execution. Every contribution, from Volunteering to Art Creation is essential to facilitate this WickerMan. What can you bring to the table?

Art, in its many mysterious ways, is at the core of this event. WickerMan offers over $6000 to fund a variety of Art initiatives, everything from Theme Camps to beautiful Installations, Altars and Performance. Through Action and Creation we transcend the expected and stretch the paradigm of the possible.

WickerMan will again take place at Four Quarters of Artemas, PA, a beautiful ecologically diverse campground. Four Quarters has natural swimming holes in Sideling Creek, rolling meadows and pine forest. Four Quarters also has a great Ride-Share database to help you carpool to the event. Bring yourself and your inspiration to be a part of a community separate from the 'default world'. Check out www.wickermanburn.org for more information and event registration.

--OK gang I'm the guy with the silly yellow pirate ship sitting on top of an offroad gokart. This year I want to do something creative below the 'water line' and extending almost to the ground, to cover tires and tube frame. My first idea is to use something like a yard wide roll of something white, then invite folks with a flare for painting marine life to do their best. Not sure how viable this is and would like to do something to enhance this with something a bit more 3-dimensional like plastic seaweed or some such. The only thing I *don't* want to do is to cover up all of the EL-wire illuminated wireframe fish I've got hangin' off of the beastie now. Suggestions welcome..

World Art Car Weekend Houston,Teaxs, the Art car Capital of the known Universe.................

This is an annual all day event with many activities for HACK! members and the general public:
We will also be at Discovery Green tonight to celebrate the ART Guys 25th anniversary and watch the world's best Polka Band-Brave Combo!

Breakfast, 8-1130a: Teotihuacan Mexican Restaurant, 1511 Airline Dr., Houston TX 77009; 713-426-4420. No specials, just a nice way to start the day. Early breakfast for those helping out at the Gulfgate Lowe's workshop from 10a-3p.... later for those who are helping out with the Art Car Museum's workshop from noon-3p.

Workshops (there are 2 this year):

Art Car Museum, noon-3p. ALL HOUSTON AREA CHILDREN ARE INVITED TO THIS FREE WORKSHOP!
All artists are encouraged to be on hand to guide children in making their own personal art car to take home. The Art Car Museum has again generously offered to host this part of our day of events by providing tables, chairs, doo-dads, gee-gaws, glue, paint and all the other necessary items to make mini art cars. They are also again providing the cars! Please ask all families to keep their creations in sight at all times, some came up missing last year and it was heartbreaking to see those couple of children cry when they left their cars to dry and came back to find them gone.

Lowe's @ Gulfgate, 10a-3p:
This is part of the 2008 Build-A-Thon benefitting the MHMRA, sponsored by Gifts with a Heart. We were asked to participate in this event back in March 2008. At our most recent meeting I had 5 people volunteer to be the artists leading children in making miniture art cars. The Klub will provide the cars. All artists are asked to bring supplies to make the cars. Scouts will earn badges that day. Please click here to see their flier.

Lunch/Dinner, any time while your art car is parked on the median across from the Art Car Museum, Hickory Hollow, 101 Heights Blvd, Houston TX 77001 www.hickoryhollowrestaurant.com/ (because it's within walking distance to the Art Car Museum)

Bar-B-Que on the Median - 3p till dusk: Bring your bar-b-ques, grillin' food, beverages, and hang out on the median for dinner - starts at 3pm.

Illuminated Cruise, assemble at dusk, leave at dark, median of across from the Art Car Museum.
WE PLAN ON BRINGING A GREAT ILLLUMINTED ART CAR CRUISE TO HOUSTON THIS EVENING AND HOPE YOU WILL JOIN US ON HEIGHTS BETWEEN I-10 AND 19TH STREET!
We will travel slowly up Heights, to 19th, U-Turn and back down past the Art Car Museum, then to points beyond. I am working on getting this info into the Houston Community Newspapers so this part of the route will be certain. All cars need to be illuminated, no regular cars should be in this processional, but may follow BEHIND!

Dreamyourtopia Border Patrol Car looking for a good home

For my Checkpoint Dreamyourtopia Burning Man project this year - a Border Control Checkpoint to enter your Own Dreams -
I created a Dreamyourtopia Border Patrol car, which we used to patrol and arrest random citizens.

I am currently an artist in residence in Dallas, where I built the main parts of the checkpoint before trucking them out to the desert.

January I'll be leaving back to the Netherlands and am now looking into the possibilities of finding a good home for the car.

http://www.dreamyourtopia is the website of the project and has some dusty pics of the car as well.

Keep on Dreamin'

So if you would like to help us out by giving her a ride from Berlin Ranger Outpost to the EYE TRAP instilation at around 3.30 - 4pm on Wednesday the 27th August drop me a line and we can work something out. We are travelling from Australia so its hard for me to build anything. Cheers Mac

I have a 36-volt golf cart that we've turned into a covered wagon. It has 6 deep-cycle batteries, and it's a 1985 EZ-Go. I wanted to bring a generator/solar charger/comnbination of both with me in case I run out of juice on the playa. What do I get?? I understand the basics of electricity but not really all the math.

Thanks, everyone!

What sticks to that foam pipe insulation, the dark gray squishy stuff? I tried RTV but that doesn't work. I'm trying to use it as a protective edging on some 1/4" plywood. If all else fails I'll drill holes in the plywood and use zipties but that'd look 'tacky', heh.

After three years on the playa my vehicle blew the bearings on the front wheel. It tore up the rim and messed up the spindle.

I got all of the replacement parts but I'm trying to figure out how to get the bearings into the rim- it's a tight fit. I tried to hammer one in but ruined the $8 bearing :-(

Does anyone have a suggestion for a home rig? I live near the Mission in SF if anyone has the right gear for this and can help me out.

Thanks,

i'm selling my '93 ford escort wagon that has served me well, not only as a means of trasportation and some awesome road trips, but as my home and machina friend,Boogy. She still runs great and has plenty of miles and trips left in her- she loves the road, but alas i can't afford the gas or insurance or the f*cking tickets i keep piling up. so...i 'm letting her go. i've been missing biking everywhere anyway. she is missing her back bumper, so she's not the most attractive lil thing but she'd make a great art car which is exactly what i was about to start on before the last ticket...poop. thought i'd leave her as a clean slate for whoever in the art community wants her-and i so do want her to go to a good creative home. i'm asking $900 for her or the very best offer.

If interested in the other one give 'em a call and ask for Kyle.

I have two golf carts that I would like to sell to someone in the BM community.
Both have been to BM but have been neglected for over a year.
One has a broken steering box (couple hundred to fix) The other is already mutated into a fly that was approved for day and night in 2006.
I also have four extra tires and rims, new top,and seat cover.
I want a thousand dollars for the two of them.
This is really a good deal.

call me at

Help save the Blood Vessel for Burning Man 2008

The Blood Vessel in its first year became an icon for those on the playa and those mourning the losses of loved ones. Clarice took passengers from the existing Temple to their homes on playa as well as transporting the Playatech coffins to their final burn destination.

Well as she will The Blood Vessel sucks us dry from the original build. Butterfly and I have sunk thousands into her as well as a lot of blood (literaly,) sweat and tears. We have thousands in credit card debt we're trying to pay off while at the same time paying an ex partner the balance $700 of the 1k he wanted in order to relinquish his half of the ownership. The partnership separation was needed in order to continue with the goal of the projects intent.

SO what we need from you guys is fundage. I cant keep putting the partner off, Albeit I sent him $300 so far we still have to raise $700. Its not a large amount but its more than Butterfly and I have while Im awaiting work in June. Butterfly also has Summer coming up and will not have her teaching job till the new semester starts in September.

We are sponsoring the Blood Vessel Rue Morgue as well as the Temple of Community and we need your help in order to be able to get Clarice back onto the Playa this year. If not she will have to be sold and scrapped in order to pay off the initial investor.

Thank you for your continued support. Its difficult times that bring us together as a community so that we may be stronger.

Contributions can be made via pay pal to: TempleOfCommunity@yahoo.com

PLEASE STATE THAT YOUR DONATION IS INTENDED FOR "The Blood Vessel".

All proceeds over the $700 amount needed for The Blood Vessel will go into the Temple of Community build for 2008.

Again, Thank you, Gothalot

I don't know how much visibility the Recycled Rainbow has around here, but it is BM-like and in NE Ohio, and does accept art cars. I'm building up an 80's Honda scooter to be much louder and brighter that it used to be, covered in the same kind of reflective vinyl they make road signs out of. You should check out the link: http://www.recycledrainbow.org/

I am taking my car to (in this order) Baton Rouge, LA, Houston, TX, Tulsa, OK, Eureka Springs, AR on consecutive weekends in May.

Is anyone else stupid enough to take the whole damn month for art cars and, if so, should we hang out?

Art Car Calendar -- http://www.artcarcalendar.com/

Baton Rouge -- http://culturecandy.org/

Houston Application Deadline is past

Tulsa -- http://www.livingarts.org/artcar.htm

Eureka Springs -- http://www.eurekaspringsartcar.com/info.html

Yeah, I know Eureka is the same weekend as Burning Flipside. I did their show in the past and it was hella fun. Plus we got gas money, a place to stay and at least one meal a day.

That is my plan for Art Car World Domination. Minions currently being accepted XD

Hey you good peeps!

I am trying to explore the feasiblility of having an inflatable surface for my art car this year. Does
anyone have any experience with PVC vinyl, inflatables, or have any burner friends in that business?
I have done some preliminary inquiries with the people who make those bouncy castles and inflatable
used car creatures, but realize a commercial solution is going to be WAY TOO COSTLY.

Any and all help appreciated!

not enough art car licenses to go around?

I read something, either here or on eplaya, about an email that was sent about a month before BM. The gist of it was that due to the increased number of participants, it may not be possible for DMV to license all the arts cars arriving on playa. I am curious to know whether this is true and whether anyone here was affected by this.

I am about to shop around in earnest for a suitable chassis for an art car project for BM08, but the possibility of spending a year working on it and discovering once I get there that I can't get it licensed, is a huge concern. So I'm very curious to know whether there was any truth to this rumor.

We are working on a project that requires a LOT of trucking around the Playa, and we decided this year we were sick of hauling around cases of liquor and mass quantities of food 20 million miles a day on increasingly ineffective bicycles in the heat. We are so busy with our own project we don't really have the time etc to devote to building our own... I know there are people with cars stored they don't use, people that may not be going this year, etc...SO If anyone out there might happen to have a small art car (4-6 ish people, just for transport of people and items to and from camps, nothing fancy) that is located or stored near Gerlach or Reno they would like to sell cheaply, rent, or better yet gift or loan to some very responsible decent drivers, I would love to talk to you!
Thanks!

ATTENDANCE CAPS AND NO GATE SALES THIS YEAR
We are capping attendance at 300 and there will be NO GATE SALES this year! Advance ticket sales will cut off about a week out from the event. Under 18 with parents only, kids under 12 are free. No in-out, no pets.

Dark Skies is the southern Nevada regional burn, now to be held across the dam in Arizona! All of Burning Man’s 10 principals apply including leave no trace, no vending and the gift economy.

THEME CAMPS
We are requesting that all theme camps register and determine the minimum required amount of space that you can fit into. We are also asking most participants to drop their camping gear and park out by the front gate in order to keep the event site open and allow art cars, pedestrian traffic, and bicycles to traverse the site safely. There’s plenty of room on this site for our event, we just have to use it judiciously and creatively. Please please please register your theme camp and art so we know who’s coming!

FIRE
Dark Skies 2008 is operating in a high fire season, and in an area of pristine high desert in a beautiful Joshua Tree Forest. Dark Skies Fire Safety will be operating under the jurisdiction of Meadview Arizona Fire Dept. All final decisions regarding fire will be up to them.

•	Fire performers will be allowed i/e: poi staffs breathers and all other hand held fire performance toys.
•	Small propane flame effects; ie hand held puffers and small lpg flame effects with neither having a vertical flame length exceeding 10ft unless pre approved will be allowed.
•	Fire barrels; fire barrels will be provided and maintained by event staff and will be in community areas.
•	No personal burn barrels and fireplaces unless pre-approved in advance of the event.
•	All generators used will be required to have an abc fire extinguisher and a pointed shovel within 20 ft at all times.
•	Tentative fire times will be between 7pm and sunrise. Fire times will be subject to blackout in case of winds sustained in excess of 12 mph.
•	All fire artists and participants must check in with DSFS. DSFS has the final say when it comes to fire of any kind.
•	Smoking is to be conducted on developed and groomed areas only, no smoking is allowed in the vegetated areas of the event site. Leave no trace; never let it hit the ground.
•	Fireworks of any kind are illegal and banned 100% at this event.
•	All fire activities will be restricted to fire performance areas and then only at pre approved times. We will clearly mark these areas on site.

Important fire information; All fire activities may be banned in the case of a regional “red flag alert”. A red flag alert occurs when high winds regionally create a situation whereby all fire activities are banned. This is not the same as the high fire season ban which runs April 15 – Nov 15 and for which we are applying for variances too for this event. This is also NOT the same situation we had last time where CCFD “stuck it to us” at the last minute and bummed a lot of people out. Our hosts want to see fire at this event. But we have to play by their rules. Lets hope for low winds on the weekend of the event!

VOLUNTEER!
The heart of any regional event is the volunteers, and we love our volunteers! We have limited Volunteer opportunities available for Dark Skies.

Please check the website and the event’s news group which is located here
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DARKSKIES_LASVEGAS/

Pictures of the new site are here
http://darkskies.vegasartists.com/pictures/3-08sitesurveyweb/index.htm

The event’s website is understandably undergoing some changes since the move and is here
http://darkskies.vegasartists.com/

Thank you to the community, to our wonderful volunteers, and to all of the artists and theme camps that make this and every regional event so darn special! We cannot do any of this without YOU.

Wickerman Burning - a new burn in south central PA

Hi!
I wanted to let everyone know about a new burn, and I am part of the planning team for it, so my opinion is biased!

The burn is "Wicker Man," to be held Thursday through Monday, Memorial Day weekend; and we have a setup weekend, the weekend before. We are trying to lay the groundwork that will grow into a full-on burn, with an amazing site, roads for art cars, a $4,000 art grant budget and plans for a stupendous effigy.

We will be using Four Quarters as our site, which has the rep as one of the most edgy and progressive non-profit camps on the east coast. They have given us their full support for Wicker Man. Four Quarters has a piped water system, hot showers, flush toilets and of course port-a-potties. Buried power lines for their bio-fueled camp generator, a covered stage and three swimming holes. Lots of camping under tall trees and out in the sun too. And 2 miles of gravelled roads. Four Quarters is located 100 miles west of DC and Baltimore, just off I-68.

We want to develop a burn that is art focused and will support big art. And one that has a vision of the future of burns that is sustainable, ecologically responsible and leaves behind a small foot print. Thus "Wicker Man;" the old celebration of the Green Man and Green energy. We already have over 20 theme camps and art projects registered, and we are just beginning our announcements. We plan to have three "Theme Towns." "Sound Town," where we can run sound all night long, like the Gaian MInd psytrance festival held at Four Quarters. "Sin City" down along the river, a cure for what ever ails you. And "Center Circle," a place for nature and spirit; held inside the amazing stone circle at Four Quarters. (Yes, there is a circle of standing stones and they are BIG!)

And then there is the Man. Planned at 35 feet high our man stands on a round Temple to the Spirit of Fire, a big enough room that you can enter and place your own art and offerings to the burn. The roof of the temple is a deck upon which stands the Man, and people can stand too.. His belly is the Upper Temple, with room for just one person at a time. Each of his arms will hold a flaming fire pot, and we hope, will move as he burns. This is a huge project and we are looking to get as many people involved in his construction as possible. Ground breaking for the Man is Friday, May 9th, and then the next two weekends until he burns.

I could go on and on, but our web site is up, with the first design drawings for the Man, pictures of art grant projects and theme camps. We have a list serve / forum too. So visit the web site at wickermanburning.org for much more info.

Wicker Man Burning, In Fire We Trust."

Putting wheels on a stipper pole stage

I have one of those stripper pole stages that is 4' x 4'. I would like to put wheels on it so we can pull it along during a parade at Decom. We also have a dancing cage that is about 4 x 7 and want to do the same thing. My question is, where can I get wheels and axel? The ultimate would be something that has bearings, like a small bicycle wheel, because it would be so much easier to move. But I don't want to spend crazy money on it cuz it's just a one-shot deal. We also thought about putting castor wheels on it, but we would then need an ATV to pull it. Any ideas for a fairly cheap, fairly easy-to-execute solution?

Thanks

FREE: VW powered trike - Perfect basis for smallish art car.

So I picked up this 1970's Volkswagon powered trike with the intent of building out an art car. I've recently come to the realization I just don't have the time or motivation, so I'd like to pass it on to someone to build something cool out of it...

It's one of those funky three wheeled trikes, minus the fiberglass body. it's got what I believe is a 1600 cc Volkswagon engine, tranny and rear portion of the frame welded to a steel front frame which runs up to a set of motorcycle forks. There's lots of good mounting points you could build a platform onto. My original idea was a horse drawn chariot with 2 fire horses in the front surronding the forks and front wheel. You can build whatever you'd like, but I need it gone.

What it needs:
Tires. 2 standard VW rear tires and 1 front motorcycle tire. They're shot and fully rotten.
The engine does turn over with a battery, but it needs to have the coil and pickup wired up. The tranny seems to be in good shape.

This thing sat at a farm for many years ignored, and I started going through it last year but just lost interest. It's not pretty, but it would make an excellent chassis/basis for an art car.

It's located in the santa cruz mountains and will fit in the back of a full size longbed truck if the tailgate's down.

First come, first served. I need the space.

Art Car Service Station on Playa

Hey Fellow Art Car Fans,

As some of you know, there will be a new art car theme camp on the playa this year.

From the people who brought you the Whiskey & Whores Saloon and Asylum village we are . . .

Tillie's Service Station
7:30 and Coral Reef
http://www.tillieservicestation.com/ (This is being used mostly to sign people up for shifts)
http://www.burningman.com/themecamps/07_camp_vill_t.html

We'll be spreading playa love by "servicing" mutant vehicles at the station. What's "servicing" mean? It could mean anything from dancing the tango on the car's deck to pumping up the tires in a bear suit - and anything in between. It's basically a five minute improvisational auto-centric performance/service to really HOT music. Six to ten+ people per crew dancing and-a-sing and-a-laughing!

If this seems like fun, then drive on over and feel the love.
We're open Tuesday thru Friday (possibly Saturday) 4:00 to 7:00pm.
If you have any questions or suggestions, and we'd to here some, please contact us at tillie@tillieservicestation.com

Honk - Honk,
Dark Skies Budget is posted

Greetings and dusty road weary hugs from Dark Skies!

We are pleased to announce that the pre event budget for DS ‘08 is posted for your perusal, dissection, and discussion.
http://darkskies.vegasartists.com/about/accounting.php

There’s still a couple items missing and we actually got the Lincoln County numbers this afternoon so those are wrong. And yes ‘vehicles’ does indeed have an “H” in it. But you’ll get the idea of what it costs to produce this event. Based on this, and a senior staff meeting happening this weekend, we anticipate TICKETS GOING ON SALE, ON SATURDAY MARCH 1ST AT 12 NOON PST .

We’d love to hear your thoughts on the matter, but we can’t reply on every list that this message has been posted to, there are simply too many lists out here to monitor them all. So please direct all correspondence to/at us on the event’s Yahoo group, which is located here
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DARKSKIES_LASVEGAS/

A full email blast with volunteer information, art, and theme camp registration is forthcoming. Just keeping you the community in the loop, so watch this space and we hope to see you all out on Delamar Lake this June!

Love and (yummy) cookies,
The Dark Skies team

post-burn car storage?

Anybody have advice / experience on spots to store big stuff after the burn? I'm speaking specifically of our artcar SnowJob. It's about 6'w x 15'l x 7'h, so it could conceivably fit in a standard 10'x20' storage bin. But it would be just as happy sitting in the middle of a big field under a tarp, which seems like it would be cheaper. It'll be coming via trailer from San Diego - but it doesn't matter where in BFE we stash it. It just can't sit on the street in conservative La Jolla.

any thoughts appreciated.

Are red,or blue,or green legal?
What can and cannot flash?
Is placement an issue?

Full Mutation vs. Visibility/Safety

Hi Gang...

Paulie here...checking in from the city of Angels with a question for the gathered conclave.

If the stated hurdle for acceptance of a vehicle is that is a proper Mutant Vehicle, not resembling that which it was...then it seems to me based on my viewing of vehicles on the playa, that visibility(for the driver) sometimes suffers....and ergo safety.

No of course, keeping speed to 5 mph tops helps with this, but...these two concepts seem to be a bit in opposition.

Cameras and video monitors to keep an eye on all sides of the vehicle/the playa?

Just wanted to prompt your thoughts.

Weehooo...another yahoo who wants to build an art car...

Greetings and much dusty love from the Dark Skies Fire Arts Festival!

Currently we are waiting on the cost recovery numbers from the BLM and costs from Lincoln County on top of those. Once we have all of that we will be able to produce a working budget and price the tickets logically (who knew?).

We will then announce the start of ticket sales. The tickets are printed and boy are they purty! It’s been somewhat quiet around here at DS HQ the past few months but rest assured that the hamsters are working overtime on this year’s event. We have much to announce, we have much to discuss, we have many needs from you the community as well. This is just a short note to let you know that the dates and location have been set.
June 19-22, 2008 and yes it will be on Delamar Lake in Lincoln County.
Much more coming soon, BOOM!

Dear Smart Car People,

I am writing to ask for some simple knowledge or suggestions, that is all.

I am charged with leading a team of five 5th through 8th graders in building a battery operated vehicle for the Odyssey of the Mind competition. My job is to provide information to the kids to enable them to solve the problem. Our problem is the electric vehicle problem. It has to have one driver that steers the vehicle while riding on it, at least three wheels, and may not touch the ground other than the wheels.

We are allowed to use commercially produced parts, however, it must include one or more integral parts that are not commercially produced to perform the function it serves as part of the propulsion system. For example, for this integral part we can use a fan motor because propulsion is not a fan's commercially produced function.

It will have to ride back and forth a 24 foot long course a few times during the competition. In other words, it doesn't have to go super fast or be that fancy, it just has to work.

That's where you come in. I really don't have much knowledge about how vehicles work. I saw this video on youtube
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKoVOs5kqSc&feature=related
so I kind of understand that I need a motor to turn a gear that's connected to a belt or chain that's connected and turns the axle. But i learned that today. I am somewhat mechanically inclined but the kids really need to do the building, not me. Like I said, I just need to show them stuff so they get good ideas. Please help. Below are the battery specs we have to work within.

The batteries we are allowed to use are:
Unmodified, commercially produced sealed batteries: Zink-Carbon, alkaline, lithium, nickel-cadmium, and nickel-metal hydride.
Prohibited battery types include:
Lead-acid, zink air, mink-mercury, silver zink, metal chloride.

May group cells together to form higher voltage or currents.
Commercially produced battery packs that fall within the approved battery types may be used.

Oh, and our budget for the whole entire project may not exceed $145.
Thanks so much for any help you may wish to give.
Sincerely,
Miss Denise

I'm hoping for a glorious afterlife.

Check this out. I have a damaged car. My 1985 Honda
Accord. 4- door. It got wrecked. Front end is damaged,
but otherwise it works. Only the radiator and front/body is
damaged. It's not worth it for me to fix it up. It's
non-operable right now and has to be moved soon.

It could be used/modified into a mutant
vehicle. Anyone interested? Someone could turn it into some kind of welded
iron thing.

Thing is, it has to go somewhere with a shop where it
can be stored. Can't be on the street.
Free if you come get it.

I'm in Redondo Beach, Ca.
My parents are giving me their 80's 190D mercedes, and I all ready have one car sitting in my backyard.
The car in the backyard is a running 1967 Renault Dauphine(no papers) that you can have for $125.00 if you come and git it. I might even give you a discount if you take the pair.
This is a good base for an art car, as it does not require smog, and the engine is standard in older forklifts, so parts are available. And when you are ready to retire it , the state will give you 650.00 for it (it was 400.00 when I got it 8yrs ago). It gets about 35mpg.

So when should Dark Skies 08 happen

DARK SKIES 2008 DATES, WE NEED YOUR INPUT!

Greetings, salutations, warm fuzzy cuddle hugs and sonic booms from Dark Skies!
We need your input on matters of scheduling next years event.

Suppose that we only had two weekends to choose from for next years Dark Skies. The third weekend in May, or the third weekend in June. Suppose also that for production costs, read: ticket prices, fire art and public safety that we were going to move the event up to Delamar Dry Lake in Lincoln County, NV which sits at 4700 feet above sea level. Nothing is written in stone yet, we are exploring all options, and asking your opinion on things before the permit apps go into either BLM field office.

Here are our thoughts on the matter of the weather and things Burning Man related...
In May, the Delamar site could be chilly and maybe even wet (from BLM), and in June it could be hot but most likely dry. To put the event in mid May puts us square in the middle of the regional event season. Going in May *could* mean that we experience some rather chilly temps, but it gets us away from Burning Man. It also however puts us where a lot of Burners, artists, and rangers may have to pick and choose what events they want to attend. We’re trying to look at all sides of this.

The biggest decider in this question may be Mother Nature herself.
Or….
What will the weather be like on Saturday at Dark Skies ’08? (the Delamar option)

Here’s some casual number crunching based on ten years of weather data for the Delamar site:

Third Saturday in May, 10 year temperatures for Alamo Nevada, subtract >< 4 degrees for Delamar lake due to 1000 foot higher altitude.
AVG LOW: 43 (sunrise)
AVG HIGH: 77 (3pm)
10 YEAR LOW LOW: 33
10 YEAR HIGH HIGH: 91
10 YEAR LOW HIGH: 66
10 YEAR HIGH LOW: 59

BOTTOM LINE for May: Cooler, one week after Toast! Almost one month before Element 11, two weeks before LIB, middle regional in the season,. If we go in May, it could be as low as 29f and our high could be as low as 62f. That particular f stands for ‘f**k me its cold’.

********************************************

Third Saturday in June data
AVG LOW: 52
AVG: HIGH: 85
1O YEAR LOW LOW: 45 (sunrise)
10 YEAR HIGH HIGH: 100 (3pm)
10 YEAR LOW HIGH: 82
10 YEAR HIGH LOW: 66

BOTTOM LINE for June: Warmer, two weeks after Element 11, two months before Burning Man, last regional of the season. If we go in June, it could be as high as 96f and as low as 49f. We’re getting closer to Burning Man, a mistake we made in Oct ’06 that we don’t intend to repeat. However, in this case we’re before the main event so it could be a great shakedown cruise for art cars, theme camps, and playa art.
Had enough yet? Then please go vote in the poll which is going up right now.

IF we had the choice of either weekend, which one would YOU choose that made the most sense for you the community and for the event itself?
3rd weekend in May, or 3rd weekend in June?

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DARKSKIES_LASVEGAS/
left side of that page “polls”

Thanks and much much dusty love!!

P.S.BOOM

Thinking of using bamboo strips instead of metal tubing and wire to make support frames for cloth-covered structures. Curious to know of other people's experiences with this material. Oh, and what's a good source in the Bay Area for loooong straight pieces of the stuff?

Generator Exhaust Extension

I would like folks' opinions as to where on the scale from "ill-advised" to "honestly-a-bad-idea-really-don't-do-this" this concept lies:

I will have a generator on, in or about my art car. It's a 1600w, McCulluch, fully enclosed, sorta-quiet inverter (http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200339425_200339425 ). The art car base is a big ol' cargo van the interior of which will unoccupied (not even a driver).
What I'd like to do is put the generator inside the [unoccupied] van, cut a hole through the wall and extend the exhaust line out. This will make it considerably quieter and help keep it out of the dust.

Has anyone ever done this? Has anyone ever done this and lived?
Does anyone care to suggest a better alternative?

looking for an la mechanic to check our engine for playa-readiness

hey there-

any of you lovelies know anything about injuns (no, not indians, rather, engines)? we have been hard at work on making a fantabulous art car for all BRC denizens to enjoy, with all systems go for playa-bound departure this weekend. wooohoooo!

however, all systems go might be a bit of an overstatement as Mr. Plush (lincoln town car) has sprung a leak, so to speak, and is currently oozing gas. (that would probably qualify as moop, yes?)

i'm hoping to find someone who knows about the workings of a car and could come check out our boy's engine (and other mechanical type parts) in downtown LA this week. of course, just like almost every other big BM project, we are currently way over budget so i'm hoping someone can take pity on us and offer up their services for free or on the cheap.

lemme know.

did i say pretty please with sugar on top?

this will be my first year with an art car. i was wondering if there is any special way to keep gas while on the playa, will just regular gas cans work, do i have to worry about the heat, etc.
my art car will be made out of a tractor and trailor. does anyone have any experiance with tractor artcars? how much gas should i plan on bringing? im not sure if anyone can give me an exact answer but a rough estimate would really help.

Anyone have a simple and good design for bike racks? We're towing a small trailer for the generator, and can build up a frame for bike racks. I was thinking of doing those red hooks that you screw into wood in the garage. Thoughts?

It's green. I'm picturing a miniture golf theme.

A Season In Hell #13: Theme From A Season In Hell

Sometimes I get nostalgic. I moved a lot in my life, an average of once every two years. I went to ten schools in thirteen years (K-12), and the one thing that was a constant was music. Music and TV. The two things that were constant were music and TV. And family. The three…three things that were constant were music, TV, family and the ever increasing amount of sarcasm that made it into my humor.

I made it down for the weekly KFJC (http://kfjc.org) staff meeting this past week, for the first time in about seven years. I’m hoping to do a show a month there. I’ll keep you posted.

With that I bring you this latest episode. If you’re a fan of nighttime police dramas, then you’ll enjoy this show.

Also, I recently saw Radio Moscow play 12 Galaxies in SF (http://www.12galaxies.com/flash.html). Check out their MySpace page, and support live music. I also have a few San Francisco artists in this show, including punk polka faves Polkacide, the Japanese yodeling cowboy Toshio Hirano, and Sesame Street cover band Cookie Mongoloid; you’ve never heard anything like them before.

Solenoid Valves?

The Burning Man DMV just sent me primary approval for my Interstellar Pleasure Barge.
Hurray.
Now I need to get back to work.

I'm looking for a 12v, 3-way solenoid valve and I'm so frugal I don't want to spend a lot of money on one. While this component is going to be used on my "art car" this is maybe not the sort of thing most art car creators know anything about.
But maybe you do?

Any ideas on where I might be able to get these sorts of things locally? I live in Minneapolis and haven't found any good sources. The hardware employees just look at me like I'm alien when I say "solenoid valve" to them.

Turn My 78 Fleetwood Into An ArtCar and Listen to This Podcast

http://johnhell.podomatic.com

I'm serious. It's bright green. I'm thinking of a golf theme. Who wants to help me?

A Season In Hell #12: Waiting for the Man

***Warning*** Because of the need for server space, I will be removing Episode #1 and possibly #2 by Thursday, August 2nd, 2007. You have been warned.

I spent a year in DC last week. I was there for an education conference, and I had the luxury of seeing the New York Dolls perform at the legendary 9:30 Club. The club has been open since the 70’s, but obviously in a very different location. What a great club; amazing sound and stage. The Dolls were incredible too. Only Sylvain and Johanson are alive from the original lineup, but the rest of the band seriously kicked ass. They have a new CD out, go get it.

I got to walk “The Mall”, which is the federal gov’t area. Quite impressive, even if you don’t like the schmuck who lives in the white house right now.

This week I include some early NY Dolls. I also have some live tracks from Tom Waits with the Kronos Quartet doing the theme to my favorite show: “The Wire”. If you haven’t seen this great police drama on HBO, you’re missing the best written show on TV. Some live Lou Reed shows up near the end of the podcast today. A real rarity is included in the guise of Neil Young. He never released “Chrome Dreams”, but all of the music made it on to something eventually. This version of “Powderfinger” never did.

I hope you enjoy the show. Please leave a comment on the website: http://johnhell.podomatic.com and tell your friends about thee show by clicking the “send to friends” link on the page.

Thanks.
