I have an electric Columbia Par Car (golf cart). No manuals sadly, but its not that old, perhaps 80's to 90's, It runs 6 volt batteries. I was wondering if Im better off making it a 12 volt system. If thats even possible and or would it be worth my bother. Batteries seem alright but if i need new ones that can get costly.
The other thing I noticed is when I put the peddle down to accelerate I have to tap it again to get it to slow down. Its as if its on cruise control. Id like to see that the speed is more regulated. Any tips?

so you probably have several 6v batteries in there... and they are probably wired in series... Ie...
+ to - to + to -
this adds the voltages for final voltage... (example... 4 6v batteries in series... total of 24 volts)
now..
each battery could be 200AH... that is you get 200 amps for 1 hour... (actually less... about 1/2 less but lets ignore this)
so 4 6v batteries in series gives you 24v at 200ah....
if you replace the batteries with 12v ones... they will be some thing like 70ah... and you only will need 2 of them to get to 24v...
so your total will be 70ah at 24v....
you will not go very far on 70ah...
I would replace the batteries with the exact ones that are in there... its designed for their usage... the charger etc...
overall you will be range limited with the electric anyways.... gas is much better.... you can go all day with gas... electric.. you will be down for 4 hours charging... run for 2 -4- 6 hours .... charge again...
I would get as much battery power you can.. and these 6v batteries are the best...
the peddle sticking sounds like a mechincal problem... check the linkage....
could replace the mechnical speed control with an electronic one

Fri, July 24, 2009 - 4:03 PMConfirm the voltage, then you can go to three 12volt batteries in series (instead of six 6volt in series).
As far as you going into "cruise control" it could be a couple things. Your peddle could be sticking. Oil will fix that. I'm thinking more likely that the relay (switch) that controls the motor, is sticking. You can probably replace it for under $100 or remove it and clean it with electrical contact cleaner. Don't use WD40 or anything like that. Electrical component cleaner is nonflammable and nonconducting. Other cleaners will probably get you shocked and catch on fire. You'll have to open er up and tinker a bit to know for certain what's going wrong. -
