this will be my first year with an art car. i was wondering if there is any special way to keep gas while on the playa, will just regular gas cans work, do i have to worry about the heat, etc.
my art car will be made out of a tractor and trailor. does anyone have any experiance with tractor artcars? how much gas should i plan on bringing? im not sure if anyone can give me an exact answer but a rough estimate would really help.
thanks
Anne Bonny

Re: gas on the playa
Fri, May 4, 2007 - 12:10 PMIt really depends on how often you're driving and how long, plus the load. You run just above idle for most of the time (those five mile per hour speed limits are for real, and trust me, with all the chaos out there, it feels fast!) I'd test it and see. Fill up the tank, and run it dry. You need to do a test run anyway.
You need to have cans with blow off valves on them, since the gas will heat up out there. Most new cans have these built in, but check when you buy them.

Fri, May 4, 2007 - 12:36 PM--Rule number one: stay the hell AWAY from plastic containers! I had one crack open on me last year; what a mess! Go for metal cans, even if it means paying too much and getting 'em mail order. Army surplus stores sometimes carry them. -

Re: gas on the playa
Fri, May 4, 2007 - 1:27 PMIIRC the man specifies stored fuel be kept 30 feet from anything, firetruck acessible, and with a spill containment system capable of holding ALL of it if it should spill.
Details are in the BM readme. -

Fri, May 4, 2007 - 1:29 PMReal tractors burn 50-150 Gallons of diesel a day. -

Re: gas on the playa
Sun, August 5, 2007 - 10:47 PMMy diesel tractor/backhoe uses maybe 5 to 8 gallons a day, and that's digging into hillsides at almost full-steam and tooling up and down mountainsides.
Not a huge tractor, but definitely not a small one, either!
That 'Real' tractor must be a Real Doozy to burn through 50-150 gallons a day!

Re: gas on the playa
Fri, May 4, 2007 - 6:02 PMi use all kinds of gas cans, metal of course is best, old school plastic cans work too just be care full not to puncture them. the main thing with gas cans is to keep them out of the sun, i use an oil canvas tarp or i keep them under my car trailer or under the truck ( under the truck is best)
i usually bring about 30 gallons in 5 gallon jerry cans, if you get desperate you can always run to gerlach. if my art car runs out of gas, well the party's over.
good luck

Any collection of 20 gallons or more of flammable liquid must be kept within a secondary containment area. The containment method can be as simple as a petroleum resistant tarp rolled up to provide a berm.
A supply of cat litter or fuel absorbent should be kept on hand near any spills basin.
All containers for liquid fuels must be clearly labeled identifying contents and hazards. Original labels are preferred.
A safety perimeter of 30 feet must be maintained between liquid fuel containers and any camping area, and clear access must be provided for the BRCFD in case of fire.
A sufficient amount of dry chemical fire extinguishers must be kept visible and available near the storage location of any liquid fuel.

Re: gas on the playa
Sun, August 5, 2007 - 10:49 PM...which is why we like lots of 5 gallon cans of fuel.
They can be kept anywhere, including on the mutant vehicle itself!
So much for a tidy 55 gallon barrel. -

Re: gas on the playa
Tue, August 21, 2007 - 6:22 PMwe're finalizing our gas plans for our car and a couple of items on here have me a bit confused, especially heidi's reply: "...which is why we like lots of 5 gallon cans of fuel. They can be kept anywhere, including on the mutant vehicle itself! "
according to my reading of the bmorg guidelines, any collection of 20+ gallons of fuel needs to follow the containment, etc. rules, regardless of whether they are kept in multiple 5 gallon cans or one big ol' barrel. am i right?

Re: gas on the playa
Tue, August 14, 2007 - 7:38 PMIf you have anyone in your group with a duel tank vehicle they can haul up a lot of extra fuel. we have an RV with two 30 gallon tanks. We only need to use one to get us there and back to Reno so the other we fill and just siphen (spelling???) the gas out for our camps art car. Works really well if thats an option.
