Due to medical issues, I've received a handicapped placard this year from the DMV Hotties (thanks!) I'm looking for a reasonable golf cart to Playafy and was wondering about gas v electric issues. I know that electric motors and playa dust don't get along. But most golf carts seem to use sealed motors. As for charging, I have a genny I can charge from, but having looked at range/consumption of 36 and 48v carts, it actually looks like I'd use less gas to run a gas powered cart than to fully charge an electric cart with my generator. Can anyone give me some advice as to your experience with either?

Fri, August 7, 2009 - 1:20 PMGas is the way to go....
you will have your cart anytime you want it.. because charging can take 4 - 8 hours.... depending on how good of a charger you have... and how big your batteries are... the noise is out on the playa... not in your camp for 4hours...
weight to power gas has batteries beat by a long shot.
endurance... gas has electric beat as well...

Re: Golf Cart Advice Please
Thu, August 13, 2009 - 9:09 PMAgreed, gas is far easier than running your generator day and night to charge an electric one, then have it die you on on the far side of the city. Speaking from experience, here. My first MV was electric. I had to replace the batteries, at no small expense, then the next year, replace the electric motor. It had to be pushed back to camp on several occasions. (The next year, I found an old Honda Wagon, by the side of the road that was begging to be turned into something shinny and fun, and have been addicted to gas ever since.)
Gas engines require some clean up, after getting back, but they are more reliable. -
