Does anyone know what I can and cannot have on the outside of my car and still be street legal?
Are red,or blue,or green legal?
What can and cannot flash?
Is placement an issue?
This will be a heavily lit limo.

Re: Street Legal Exterior Lighting
Mon, January 28, 2008 - 2:32 PMAs far as I know the main thing to watch out for is red lights, they can be to the rear of the car, but the further ya go forward the more you risk harassment from the local constabulary. Generally speaking for the streets flashing lights are a no no, although laws against them are pretty vague, they attract a lot more bad attention than good. Though there's a lot of available strobe lights, they are there to be used while parked. Another type to avoid is fog light types directionals, the general thought is that they can blind people so theres laws like height limitations for them. a few years back there were requirements for covers on lights mounted on jeep and truck roll bars, in some states but I think that's largely been relaxed.
I've seen some pretty extensive light jobs on the roads, so I think there's not too much said about LED light strings and so fourth. I guess if you stick to marker lights that are not red and don't flash the rest is all good. There's probably some illogical conclusion that could be reached but I think you'd really have to work it to pull that off. I might advise a separate switching system for the artful auxiliary lights just in case. The unexpected has been known to happen.

Mon, January 28, 2008 - 9:09 PMnothing blue at all in CA. Follow the rules for marker lights and you will be ok.

We had a guy over for dinner on the Playa that drove from Texas on a steel Rat. I've got that picture here somewhere....
He said he carried a bible and pulled it out every time a cop pulled him over. He would tell them he was passing through town, started preaching, and they let him go every time, asking that he get out of their town. He was happy to oblige.
He rocked. But I wouldn't suggest anyone else do that. That took 'nads of steel. A lacking a few marbles. -

Re: Street Legal Exterior Lighting
Tue, January 29, 2008 - 8:45 AMRed can only be on the back
White can only be on the front
Yellow can be anywhere, as far as I know
No blue whatsoever
Not sure about green
Flashing is generally a bad idea as it would be confused with signals and emergency lights. -

Re: Street Legal Exterior Lighting
Tue, January 29, 2008 - 11:40 AMHmm,sounds like RGB lighting would be the best, that way I can get the color I want while stationary, and not have,or at least,be able to change any colors if the local constabulary takes umbrage.
Thanks........... -

Tue, January 29, 2008 - 12:48 PMyea that's probably the best way to go, though it's kind of a drag. I'd love to see a lit up limo headed down the road. -

The light source in each of the lamps shall not exceed two candlepower and shall emit diffused light of any color, except that the color red is permitted only on authorized emergency vehicles.

Re: Street Legal Exterior Lighting
Fri, February 1, 2008 - 11:36 PMIts pretty easy to do it like the offroad boys...
Cover it up on the street.
Then you can have whatever lights you want.
CA has a limit of 6 major lights(headlights and aux) on the front. -
